Sun Outage May Effect Picture Quality
Communication satellites that are used to provide video programming have orbits located in the equatorial plane. In spring and fall, the sun also passes through this plane. For this brief amount of time the sun and satellite are aligned so that the RF energy from the sun overpowers the RF energy from the satellite. This is a gradual occurrence as the sun moves closer to the center of each satellite transmission path each day. For analog channels, this annoyance begins as slight "sparkles" of interference and progresses to complete picture loss. Digital channels may experience "tiling" at first and ultimately complete picture loss during peak interference periods. Exact times at which these outages will begin and end is difficult to predict but there are some approximations available.
